Why am I volunteering in Romania? Many years ago I saw a tv program which broke my heart - it was on the terrible state of orphanages in Eastern Europe. Fortunately times have changed, yet while the horrifying conditions have improved for many, volunteers are still desperately needed.
Finally I am now acting on the desire I felt immediately after first seeing those images on tv close to 20 years ago.
Why fundraise? There are many reasons. One is that I believe that we are a global community - what affects the less fortunate amongst us affects us all. By fundraising we are all chipping in to help alleviate problems, just like an immediate family would.
Mother Theresa once said, "In this life we cannot do great things. We can only do small things with great love." This is my 'small thing'. I won't be fixing the world, but I will be part of an effort by many people in the global community who come together to positively enhance the lives of a community of children.
